MINE.IO at GEC 2025 – Technology Innovation Meets Equality in Mining
On June 5–6, 2025, Frontier Innovation Centre (FRON), a key partner in the MINE.IO project, took part in the 7th Summit on Gender Equality in Computing (GEC2025), hosted by the Greek ACM-W Chapter at the University of Piraeus. This annual event brings together voices from academia, industry, and civil society to explore bold ideas, critical research, and collaborative responses to ongoing gender disparities in tech.
Angela-Maria Despotopoulou represented FRON during a flash talk introducing the team’s poster titled “Next-Gen Decentralised Workflow Automation in Ore Mining: A System Architecture Perspective.”
This work, developed under the Horizon Europe MINE.IO project, proposes a bold rethinking of workflow automation for the mining sector. The proposed architecture integrates technologies such as BPMN, Camunda, IPFS, Ethereum Smart Contracts, and Hyperledger Besu to enable transparency, traceability, regulatory compliance, and performance tracking across the mining value chain. It directly addresses the inefficiencies often found in complex, multi-stakeholder collaborations between mining operators, contractors, and regulators.
Mining has traditionally relied on rigid infrastructure – much like the technology. The solutions presented by FRON aim to disrupt this legacy with open standards, adaptive coordination, and architecture grounded in transparency and inclusion.
GEC2025 served as a powerful reminder that innovation is not just about what we build, but also who gets to build it. We are proud that MINE.IO contributes to this important conversation by bringing together advanced digital tools and a vision for more equitable, collaborative industries.
