Dimitris Kaliampakos at IPMS 2024 International Post Mining Symposium

We are thrilled to announce that Dimitris Kaliampakos, Professor at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and Vice-President of the Lavrion Technological Cultural Park (LTCP), participated in the IPMS 2024 International Post Mining Symposium held from May 22-24, 2024. Professor Kaliampakos delivered a compelling presentation titled “The Lavrion Mines Restoration Project Under the Digital Twin Concept.”

His presentation focused on the restoration and regeneration of the historic Lavrion mining area, which boasts a mining history of over 3000 years. Highlighting the transformation of the Lavrion Technological Cultural Park (LTCP) from an abandoned industrial complex to a vibrant cultural and technological hub, he emphasized the use of digital twin technology in this process. The digital twin concept allows for the simulation and optimization of the entire mining process, from initial survey to waste reuse and environmental restoration.

This innovative approach, supported by the MINE.IO project under the Horizon Europe research and innovation program, aims to address the complex challenges of Lavrion’s long mining history while unveiling new opportunities through modern technologies.

We invite you to review Professor Kaliampakos’s insightful presentation at the bottom of this page.
