Mandalay Resources Joins MINE.IO – Welcoming a New Partner and Pilot Site

We are excited to announce that Mandalay Resources, owner of the Björkdal gold mine in northern Sweden, has officially joined the Mine.io consortium!

Located 28 km northwest of Skellefteå, the Björkdal mine is a modern underground operation with an annual processing capacity of 1.45 million tonnes of ore and a gold output of 42,323 ounces in 2024. The site is recognized for its high operational efficiency and strong commitment to sustainability, fully aligned with Sweden’s rigorous environmental standards and best practices in modern resource management.

As part of Mine.io, Björkdal will also serve as a new pilot site, supporting several key research and demonstration activities:

🔌 ENRX electrification pilot demonstration – Björkdal will host evaluations of ENRX’s electrification technologies, providing practical industry feedback on safety standards and functional requirements.

🧪 X-ray classification and sorting of ore samples – Unique geological conditions in Björkdal’s gold-bearing quartz veins will provide valuable input for Fraunhofer’s sorting technology tests in Germany.

🤖 Field testing of autonomous mining systems – A battery-powered articulated robot developed by Luleå University of Technology (LTU) will be tested on-site to assess its performance in a real mining environment.

📊 Contribution of operational data – The mine will provide data to support the development of an advanced mine planning tool aimed at improving safety, optimizing resources, and enhancing material handling efficiency.

By joining the consortium and opening its operations to collaborative innovation, Mandalay Resources and the Björkdal site significantly strengthen Mine.io’s mission to drive smart, sustainable, and safe mining technologies across Europe.
